Rural Electrification Agency (REA) don propose N1.89 billion for installation of mini-grids to develop wetin dem call “smart communities” across Nigeria six geo-political zones.
According to details from the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the mini-grid projects still dey ongoing, and REA plan to share N315 million give each zone. Altogether, the agency get N502 billion wey dem earmark for capital projects inside the 2026 budget.
REA also propose N2.1 billion for installation of solar streetlights inside public institutions across the six zones, with each zone set to collect N350 million.
Another N2.03 billion go for alternative energy deployment for technology demonstration. From that money, North East go get N455 million, while the remaining five zones go receive N315 million each.
To further support small businesses and household power needs, REA plan to spend another N1.89 billion on solar home systems for economic development, with equal allocation of N315 million per zone.
Apart from zonal projects, the agency also propose close to N3 billion for ongoing electrification projects inside Oyo State. Some of the key projects include:
N350 million for solar mini-grids for farmers in selected communities
N350 million for electrification and solar streetlights for underprivileged communities
N350 million for grid extension to underserved areas around Oluyole
N350 million for solar streetlights in security-challenged areas like Egbeda
N350 million for electrification and solar streetlights across local governments in Oyo State
N350 million for renewable energy solutions in unserved communities in Ona-Ara and environs
N70 million for repair of roads with solar lighting in selected rural communities in Oyo North Senatorial District
In addition, REA also earmark N5 billion for electrification of grain processing zones and activation of the night-economy programme, to help boost economic activities after dark.
All these projects form part of REA bigger plan to expand electricity access, promote renewable energy, and drive economic growth in rural and underserved communities across Nigeria.
