President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned new warships for the Nigerian Navy and launched a Regional Maritime Security Task Force as part of activities marking the Navy’s 70th anniversary.
The event took place during the International Fleet Review, where naval delegations from different countries gathered to celebrate the achievements of the Nigerian Navy and strengthen cooperation in maritime security.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Tinubu praised the Nigerian Navy for its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters, securing critical national assets and supporting economic growth.
He said the commissioning of the new warships reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s defence architecture and improving security within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
According to the President, a stronger Navy is essential for protecting the nation’s blue economy, safeguarding shipping routes and tackling criminal activities at sea.
New Warships To Strengthen Naval Operations
Tinubu said the newly commissioned vessels will boost the Navy’s operational capabilities and improve surveillance, patrol and emergency response operations across Nigerian waters.
He noted that the warships will support ongoing efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, sea robbery, smuggling and other forms of maritime crime.
The President also commended officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy for their professionalism, sacrifice and commitment to national security.
Regional Task Force To Tackle Maritime Threats
One of the major highlights of the event was the launch of a Regional Maritime Security Task Force designed to strengthen collaboration among African countries in addressing security threats within the region.
The initiative is expected to improve intelligence sharing, joint operations and coordinated responses to piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling and other transnational maritime crimes.
Security experts believe the task force will enhance safety in the Gulf of Guinea and help protect one of Africa’s most important trade corridors.
Navy Reaffirms Commitment To Maritime Security
Speaking at the event, the leadership of the Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to modernising the service through improved training, advanced technology and acquisition of modern platforms.
The Navy stated that its 70th anniversary serves as an opportunity to celebrate past achievements while preparing for future security challenges.
The International Fleet Review featured naval displays, military parades and participation from foreign naval forces, showcasing Nigeria’s growing influence in maritime security and regional defence cooperation.
As the Nigerian Navy marks seven decades of service, the commissioning of new warships and the launch of the regional task force are expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security and reinforce collaboration among African nations.
