NERC Approve Special Compensation for Band A Customers Wey Suffer Power Shortage

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) don approve special compensation package for eligible Band A electricity customers wey suffer from reduced power supply because of generation challenges between February and March 2026.

According to NERC, the decision come after serious electricity generation shortfalls affect the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), making many Distribution Companies (DisCos) unable to deliver the promised service hours to some Band A customers.

The commission explain say the problem largely come from inadequate gas supply and vandalism of important gas and transmission facilities, factors wey dey outside the direct control of the DisCos.

Who Go Benefit?

NERC say the compensation package cover the period between February and March 2026.

For Band A feeders wey receive average electricity supply of between 18 and 20 hours daily, the existing compensation framework under Addendum No. NERC/2024/003 go continue to apply for both Maximum Demand (MD) and Non-Maximum Demand (Non-MD) customers.

For feeders wey receive less than 18 hours of electricity daily, affected customers go qualify for special compensation without any downgrade of their Band A status during the period under review.

Compensation Details

Under the directive:

  • Non-MD customers go receive compensation equal to 20 percent of the approved February 2026 energy cap for their feeder.
  • MD customers go receive compensation equal to 20 percent of the average energy billed per MD customer in February 2026.

How Customers Go Receive Compensation

NERC direct say:

  • Prepaid customers go receive their compensation through token credits.
  • Postpaid customers go receive theirs through bill adjustments.

The commission also warn DisCos against using the compensation to offset any existing debt owed by customers.

Deadline for Payment

NERC order DisCos to complete compensation for February 2026 on or before May 31, 2026, while compensation for March 2026 must be completed not later than June 30, 2026.

The regulator further instruct electricity distribution companies to clearly inform customers about the value and period of the compensation received.

NERC reassure Nigerians of its commitment to protecting electricity consumers while maintaining the stability and sustainability of the country’s power sector.

The commission add say it will continue to monitor implementation closely to ensure all qualified customers receive the compensation due to them.
