The Federal High Court sitting for Lagos don declare unlawful the controversial N110 billion vehicle purchase and allowance scheme approved for members of the National Assembly.
The court rule say the spending of N40 billion to buy 465 vehicles for lawmakers and another N70 billion as support allowances for newly elected members breach procurement laws, constitutional provisions and public trust.
According to the judgment, the spending fail to comply with established legal procedures guiding public procurement and government expenditure.
The court hold say public funds must be managed with transparency, accountability and strict adherence to the law, stressing that government institutions are expected to act in the interest of Nigerians at all times.
The ruling also emphasise say public office holders must remain accountable for the use of taxpayer money, especially at a time when many citizens dey face economic hardship.
The controversial vehicle and allowance package had earlier generated widespread public criticism, with many Nigerians questioning the timing and necessity of such expenditure amid growing economic challenges across the country.
Legal experts believe the judgment could have far-reaching implications for future government spending and procurement processes, particularly within legislative institutions.
