Customs Seize Over 580,000 Unregistered Drugs for Kano, Hand Them Over to NAFDAC
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, don intercept more than 580,000 unregistered pharmaceutical products for Kano and hand them over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The interception happen on June 9, 2026, for SAHCO Shed inside Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport after Customs officers carry out intelligence-led operation.
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Friday for Customs House, Bompai, Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, say Customs and NAFDAC officials jointly inspect the consignments and confirm say the products no get the required registration and certification to enter or circulate for Nigeria.
According to am, the seized items include 575,440 tablets, 5,415 injections, 1,075 bottles of eye drops, and 243 inhaler canisters.
Adamu say the successful interception show Customs’ commitment to protecting the health of Nigerians and strengthening collaboration with regulatory agencies to stop illegal and uncertified medicines from entering the country.
He warn importers and distributors involved in smuggling unregistered pharmaceutical products to stop the illegal business, adding say the Command go continue to intensify surveillance and enforcement operations across its area of responsibility.
Receiving the seized products on behalf of NAFDAC, Assistant Director of the agency’s Ports Inspection Directorate in Kano, Azik Kanadi, commend the Nigeria Customs Service for the operation.
Kanadi describe the seizure as a major step towards protecting Nigerians from dangerous and substandard medicines. He also warn importers against bringing unregistered drugs into the country, stressing say medicines wey no pass regulatory evaluation fit pose serious health risks.
He reaffirm say NAFDAC go continue to work closely with Customs and other security agencies to stop unsafe medicines from reaching the Nigerian market and ensure only approved pharmaceutical products are available for public use.
