Tinubu Hail Customs CG Adeniyi Over Re-election as WCO Council Chair
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu don congratulate the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, after customs administrations across the world unanimously re-elect am as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.
The re-election happened during the 147th and 148th Sessions of the WCO Council held in Brussels, Belgium.
In a statement released on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the re-election as a major achievement for both Adeniyi and Nigeria.
According to the President, the overwhelming support from member countries shows the confidence the international customs community has in Adeniyi’s leadership and reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs administration.
Tinubu said the recognition also highlights the transformation taking place within the Nigeria Customs Service, which he described as one of the world’s leading customs institutions.
The President noted that his recent decision to extend Adeniyi’s tenure as Comptroller-General was based on the need to sustain ongoing reforms within the Service.
He added that Adeniyi’s unanimous re-election by the WCO has further validated that decision.
Tinubu praised the Customs boss for strengthening institutional capacity, modernising customs operations, improving revenue generation and enhancing border security.
He also commended innovations introduced under Adeniyi’s leadership, including the B’Odogwu customs clearance platform, which has helped modernise customs operations and facilitate legitimate trade.
The President further applauded the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, wider deployment of non-intrusive cargo inspection technology and stronger collaboration with other government agencies.
According to him, these reforms have improved trade facilitation, strengthened border management and aligned the Nigeria Customs Service with global best practices.
Tinubu said the reforms are also contributing to the Federal Government’s economic agenda by making trade more efficient, improving transparency and boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness in international commerce.
The President wished Adeniyi a successful second term as Chairperson of the WCO Council, expressing confidence that his renewed global mandate would strengthen international customs cooperation and further enhance the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service.
