NPC Say New Digital System Go Improve Identity Registration, National Planning Across Nigeria
The Federal Government don officially launch nationwide digital registration of births and deaths under the new Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system.
Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, announce the development during a press briefing for Abuja, describing the initiative as a major breakthrough to modernise Nigeria civil registration system and improve national data collection.
According to am, the new digital platform, VitalReg, begin full operation across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from July 1, 2026.
Dr. Yusuf explain say the technology-driven platform go ensure say every birth and death wey happen for Nigeria dey properly recorded through a secure digital process.
He reveal say Nigeria dey record about five million births every year, but only around 57 percent dey officially registered, while death registration still remain below 20 percent.
According to am, the low registration rate don affect government planning and also deny many Nigerians access to legal identity and important public services.
To solve the challenge, the NPC don establish over 4,000 registration centres across the 774 Local Government Areas, with plans to increase the number to about 8,000 centres nationwide.
The NPC Chairman also explain say the VitalReg platform go provide faster registration, 24-hour online access, digital certificate issuance where necessary, less paperwork, better data accuracy and stronger protection of citizens’ information.
He add say the platform don connect with Nigeria’s digital identity system as part of the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda.
To make registration easier for communities, the Commission announce partnership with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited.
Meanwhile, the Commission say although some administrative services like correction of records, certificate reissuance, attestation and verification requests go attract reviewed fees, birth registration and birth certificates for children aged 0 to 5 years remain free of charge.
Dr. Yusuf call on state governments, local councils, hospitals, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, development partners and the media to support the successful implementation of the digital registration programme.
He reaffirm say the Commission remain committed to making sure every Nigerian gets legal identity from birth to strengthen national planning, improve governance and ensure nobody is left behind.
