The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) don tell Nigerians make dem no put blame for lecturers head as university shutdown dey loom. Instead, dem say na Federal Government (FG) cause di paralysis wey go soon hit campuses across di country.
For one press conference wey happen for Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Delta State capital, on Monday, ASUU Benin Zone through dia Zonal Coordinator, Monday Igbafen, talk say Nigerian scholars don dey suffer as di most marginalised group for di country.
According to Igbafen, di Benin Zone cover University of Benin, Ambrose Alli University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Delta State University, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, University of Delta, Dennis Osadebay University and Southern Delta University.
He yan say:
“We dey call Nigerians make dem no hold ASUU responsible, but hold FG responsible for di paralysis wey go soon jam universities. Since we suspend strike October 2022, government never fulfill promise wey dem give us. Till now dem never sign di renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and dem dey drag leg for conditions of service, salary arrears and funding.”
ASUU accuse government of neglect, pointing say lecturers still dey owed years of promotion arrears, three and half months withheld salaries, and even third-party deductions. Dem also complain say while cost of living dey climb everyday, lecturers salary don remain poor for over 16 years.
The union warn say Nigeria university system dey “on top precipice” and fit collapse if government no act fast.
Igbafen call on students, parents, NLC, civil society, press and all stakeholders make dem pressure FG and state governments to honor agreements wey dem sign with ASUU.
He add say most government officials no dey serious about public universities because dem children dey study abroad, leaving Nigerian youths to suffer for dilapidated campuses.
ASUU conclude say strike no be wetin dem like to do, but na di only option wey government dey push dem into anytime promises no dey kept.
