Federal Government don officially announce ban importation of cement, poultry, pharmaceutical products and other goods from countries outside ECOWAS, as part of new Nigeria fiscal policy measures for 2026.

For circular wey Federal Ministry of Finance release, wey Minister of Finance, Wale Edun sign on April 1, 2026, government talk say dis move dey part of revised import prohibition list wey get about 17 items.
According to the statement, the ban go affect only goods wey come from countries wey no be members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), as government dey try boost local production and trade within the region.
The ministry explain say the new list dey under 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and tariff amendments, wey don replace the previous 2023 policy.
However, government give importers small relief, as dem approve 90 days grace period starting from April 1, 2026. This one go allow traders wey don already open Form ‘M’ and enter trade agreements before the policy take effect, to clear their goods using the old duty rates.
Dem still warn say any new import transaction wey start from April 1 go follow the new import duty rules immediately.
Full list of banned items
Items wey dey the revised import prohibition list include:
- Live or frozen poultry and birds
- Pork, beef and other animal parts
- Bird eggs (except for research and breeding)
- Refined vegetable oil (with few exceptions)
- Sugar and flavoured sucrose
- Cocoa products like butter and powder
- Tomatoes and tomato paste
- Sweetened and flavoured drinks
- Bagged cement
- Medicines and pharmaceutical products
- Waste pharmaceuticals
- Fertilisers (NPK)
- Soaps and detergents
- Cartons and corrugated paper products
- Glass bottles above 0.15 litres
- Iron and steel products
- Ballpoint pens and parts
Green tax on vehicles
Apart from the import ban, Federal Government still introduce 2 percent green tax surcharge on motor vehicles with engine capacity from 2000cc and above, as part of effort to support environmental sustainability.
