Federal Government don declare Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 3, 2026 as National Learning Assessment (NLA) Week as Nigeria prepares to carry out its first-ever nationwide learning assessment for schools across the country.

According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday, the exercise go hold for all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with the aim of gathering reliable data on how students dey perform for key subjects.

Government explain say the assessment go help provide evidence for better education planning, policy reforms, resource allocation and strategies to improve learning outcomes for Nigerian students.

The ministry stress say the exercise no be examination for promotion, placement or certification. Instead, na diagnostic assessment wey go help authorities understand the true state of learning across the education sector.

Preparations for the programme begin since 2025 through collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), with support from UNICEF and the World Bank.

Officials reveal say assessment tools don already dey developed, tested and validated, while personnel wey go participate for the exercise don receive necessary training.

The assessment go take place for selected schools nationwide and go cover pupils and students for Primary 3, Primary 5, Junior Secondary School 2 (JS2) and Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2).

Subjects wey go be assessed include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, as well as Citizenship and Heritage Studies.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa describe the exercise as a major step towards improving accountability and strengthening the quality of education in Nigeria.

According to the minister, the assessment go provide government with accurate information needed to make evidence-based decisions and implement reforms that will improve learning outcomes for students across the country.

He add say the exercise represents an important milestone in the efforts to build a more effective and data-driven education system for Nigeria.
