The Presidency don publicly distance itself from Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, wey allegedly dey parade himself as the Director-General of one non-existent government agency called the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, also known as the Presidential Economic Advisory Council.
For a statement wey Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, sign on Wednesday, the Presidency describe Adeyemi as an alleged impostor wey forge official documents and deceive government officials and members of the public.
According to the statement, the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President first discover the alleged scam in October 2025 after officials of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) complain say another agency wey no legally exist dey carry out similar responsibilities.
Following the complaint, the Chief of Staff petition the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, asking them to investigate the alleged forgery of appointment letters and the activities of the fake agency.
The Presidency say investigations show that Adeyemi allegedly rent office space inside the Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja, where he reportedly operate as if the organisation was an official Federal Government agency.
The statement also allege say he organise meetings with foreign diplomats and Nigerian officials, while trying to obtain diplomatic support from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to secure United States visas for people he claimed were staff of the agency.
However, the Office of the Chief of Staff insist say it never appoint Adeyemi into any position and that the so-called Presidential council no exist.
The Presidency also explain say appointments into government agencies no fall under the responsibility of the Chief of Staff.
Police investigations later led to Adeyemi’s arrest on October 27, 2025.
During a search of his office and residence, investigators reportedly recover forged appointment letters and other documents believed to have been used for the alleged operation.
According to the Presidency, police also discover that Adeyemi allegedly operate 34 bank accounts, including several accounts opened in the names of fictitious government agencies.
Investigators further allege say he used forged documents to open an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)by misleading the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The Presidency, however, clarify say no government money was ever paid into the account.
After completing investigations, the police filed an eight-count criminal charge against Adeyemi and two others before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The case is expected to come up for hearing on July 27, 2026.
The Presidency also claim say this no be the first time Adeyemi don make false public claims.
According to the statement, in 2016, he allegedly presented himself as an ambassador and President-General of an organisation he claimed was affiliated with the United Nations (UN). The UN later reportedly denied the existence of such an organisation.
The Presidency advised politicians and members of the public not to be misled by Adeyemi’s claims, stressing that the matter is already before the court and should be allowed to follow due legal process.
