Federal Government don confirm say some countries like United Kingdom, United States, and France don give Nigeria green light (agrément) for some of the people wey dem nominate as ambassadors, as government dey try fill plenty diplomatic positions wey don empty for long time.
Spokesperson for Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, talk this one for statement wey dem release on Monday, say so far about 10 countries don already approve Nigeria nominees.
Agrément na official permission wey one country go give another country before dem go accept their ambassador. Without this approval, ambassador no fit resume work for that country.
According to the ministry, countries wey don approve include United Kingdom, France, United States, Ireland, Qatar, Benin, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal and Sierra Leone. Dem still dey wait for response from other countries.
Ebienfa talk say process to get approval from more countries still dey go on, and say dem go soon announce date for induction ceremony of the ambassadors once Presidency of Nigeria give final approval.
This development come after long time wey Nigeria no get full ambassadors for many foreign missions under Bola Tinubu government.
Since Tinubu enter office for May 2023, e never appoint new ambassadors immediately, make many embassies depend on chargés d’affaires to run operations.
Plenty stakeholders don criticize this delay, warn say e fit reduce Nigeria diplomatic power and affect relationship with important countries.
To solve the problem, Presidency of Nigeria send list of 65 ambassador nominees go National Assembly of Nigeria for late 2025.
Even though dem don screen the nominees since December, dem still need approval (agrément) from host countries before dem fit fully deploy them.
Meanwhile, report show say some countries like India no gree accept some of the nominees, because of their diplomatic policy wey no too support accepting ambassadors from governments wey get less than two years to finish their tenure.
