Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), don tell Federal Government make dem withdraw and recheck di 175 people wey President Bola Tinubu recommend for presidential pardon.
Falana talk say even though Tinubu get constitutional power under Section 175 to grant pardon, e no mean say dem go dey use am anyhow. He say di kind people wey appear for di pardon list no pure — say some of dem na politically exposed people, alleged drug barons, armed robbers, terrorists, and even people wey court don convict for murder and homicide.
Di lawyer talk say e dey important make government withdraw and review di list “in di interest of justice and national morality.”
Di list, wey Council of State don approve, include historical names like Sir Herbert Macaulay, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and Major General Mamman Vatsa. But e don cause wahala because some convicted people like Maryam Sanda — wey court sentence to death for killing her husband — also dey among di names wey dem say go benefit.
Falana warn say if government no act fast, e go reduce people confidence for di justice system.
Meanwhile, Attorney-General of di Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), don explain say nobody for di list don release yet. He talk say di process still dey under final administrative review to make sure say everything follow legal and procedural requirement before dem issue official release paper.
Falana still suggest make di Prerogative of Mercy Committee recommend to state governors to handle people wey commit state-level offences, as Section 212 of di Constitution talk.
