INEC: FCT Council Election Record 14% Voter Turnout, Higher Than 2022

Participation Rise From 9.4% To 14.2% But Voter Apathy Still High

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) don announce say just-concluded Area Council election for Federal Capital Territory (FCT) record 14.2 percent voter turnout.

The commission say the figure show improvement compared to 9.4 percent wey dem record during the 2022 FCT council elections.

INEC Acting Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, disclose this for statement wey release on Sunday after Saturday chairmanship and councillorship polls across the six area councils.

Registered Voters Increase

According to INEC, total registered voters for 2026 reach 1.68 million, compared to 1.58 million in 2022 — increase of about 100,000 voters, representing 6.3 percent growth in the voters register.

Out of the 1.68 million registered voters, 239,210 people cast their ballots, resulting in 14.2 percent turnout.

For 2022, only 148,685 voters participate out of 1.58 million registered voters, giving 9.4 percent turnout.

Voter Apathy Still Concern

Despite the increase, INEC admit say participation still low, as more than 85 percent of registered voters no come out to vote in 2026.

Observers say although turnout improve small compared to last poll, the high level of voter apathy still raise serious concern about public confidence and participation in Nigeria electoral process ahead of 2027 general elections.
