Nigeria Intensify Bid to Host CAF General Assembly, CAF Awards for 2026
The National Sports Commission (NSC) don step up efforts to bring two major Confederation of African Football (CAF) events to Nigeria after Chairman Shehu Dikko host CAF General Secretary Samson Adamu and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau for Abuja.
The high-level meeting, wey happen on Monday, June 29, 2026, focus on Nigeria’s plan to host the CAF General Assembly for Abuja in October 2026 and the CAF Awards for Lagos in December 2026.
The discussion also cover other strategic plans aimed at developing football across Nigeria and Africa.
According to the NSC, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier approved Nigeria’s move to engage CAF on hosting the two events.
The approval followed a meeting between President Tinubu and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Conference in Kenya on May 12, 2026.
The meeting between the NSC Chairman and the CAF General Secretary was held to advance the President’s approval and move the hosting plans forward.
During the engagement, Shehu Dikko congratulated Samson Adamu on his appointment as CAF General Secretary, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Nigerian football.
Dikko, who has served as a member of CAF’s Organising Committee for Inter-Club Competitions and Club Licensing Management since 2016, also thanked Dr. Patrice Motsepe and the CAF Executive Committee for the confidence they placed in the Nigerian football administrator.
The National Sports Commission said the engagement reflects its commitment to strengthening partnerships with CAF and positioning Nigeria as a leading destination for football development and major sporting events on the African continent.
If approved, hosting both the CAF General Assembly and CAF Awards would further boost Nigeria’s profile as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
