Tinubu Establish National Health Technology Office, Appoint Dr Obi Adigwe as Pioneer Coordinator
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu don approve the establishment of the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office (NHTDAO) as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital healthcare system.
The President also appoint Dr Obi Adigwe as the pioneer National Coordinator of the new office, wey go operate under the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the NHTDAO go serve as the national platform to coordinate Nigeria’s digital health agenda. The office no go replace existing government agencies but go work with both public and private health institutions to improve collaboration, standardisation and data sharing across the health sector.
The office go also oversee the implementation of the National Digital Health Architecture, wey the National Council on Health approve in November 2025.
Before the appointment, Dr Adigwe serve as Director-General of the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), where he led several initiatives in artificial intelligence, scientific research and technology transfer.
The Presidency say Adigwe also coordinated major international research projects, including a ¥300 million nanotechnology grant, the AFREXIMBank-supported Africa’s first Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) Training Facility and an €18 million European Union health research grant.
To provide policy direction for the new office, government don set up a Steering Committee co-chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), Olaniyi Yusuf.
Other members include the Minister of State for Health, permanent secretary of the ministry, representatives from relevant government agencies, state commissioners of health from the six geopolitical zones and stakeholders from the healthcare industry.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the NHTDAO go accelerate Nigeria’s transition to a secure, interoperable and data-driven healthcare system capable of improving healthcare delivery and outcomes for all Nigerians under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
