World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, don call make dem reform the way the organization dey take make decisions, especially the “consensus rule” wey dey slow down global trade deals.
She talk this one for Future Investment Initiative Conference wey happen for Riyadh on Tuesday.
Okonjo-Iweala talk say, “We need to reform the system; we no fit just dey relaxed. The way we dey take do things for WTO — where everybody must agree before any decision — dey delay plenty important matters.”
She also beg the 166 member countries make dem reason with the United States on the wahala dem get with WTO, talk say some of the U.S. complaints make sense.
According to her, the global trade system don face the biggest challenge in 80 years but e never collapse.
“The fact say almost three-quarter of world goods trade still dey happen under WTO terms na something to thank God for,” she talk, as she hail countries wey no retaliate when former U.S. President Donald Trump put tariffs on trade partners.
Okonjo-Iweala promise say she go continue to push for reforms wey go make WTO stronger, faster, and better to handle the wahala wey dey affect world trade today.
