Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, don warn Nigerians make dem no expect perfect election for the 2027 Nigerian General Election.
Amupitan talk this one on Sunday during one citizens’ town hall meeting wey broadcast live for major television stations across the country.
According to am, the electoral body go try its best to conduct credible election, but operational challenges — especially for remote communities — fit make it difficult to achieve 100 percent perfect process.
“INEC go try as much as possible give Nigeria the best election we fit conduct, but for now we no fit promise say the election go be 100 percent perfect,” he talk.
Electronic Result Transmission Still Possible
On the issue of electronic transmission of election results, wey cause plenty argument after the 2023 Nigerian General Election, the INEC chairman say the commission get the technology and capacity to transmit results for 2027.
However, he explain say the major challenge na the difficulty of sending results in real time from some very remote polling units across Nigeria.
Example From FCT Election
Amupitan give example from the recent Area Council election for Abuja.
According to am, results from five area councils arrive on time, but one polling ward — Kabi ward for Kuje — delay because the area hard to reach and communication network no dey stable.
He explain say election officials lose communication with the ward completely on election day and the results only arrive the following morning.
“The problem no really be network itself but the adequacy of the network infrastructure,” Amupitan explain.
Logistics Still Key Challenge
The INEC boss also admit say logistics problems and human errors affect parts of the election process, but say the commission dey work to improve the system.
“Your election fit only be as good as your logistics. Once logistics fail, the election process begin get problems,” he add.
Despite the challenges, Amupitan say he believe the 2027 election go still better pass previous ones because Nigerian voters now dey more politically aware.
INEC Review Party Regulations
Meanwhile, Independent National Electoral Commission don also organise one technical workshop for Abuja to review regulations wey govern political parties.
The review aim to align party rules with the Electoral Act 2026 and address common problems like unclear party primaries, membership disputes, poor financial transparency, and lack of inclusion for women, youth and persons with disabilities.
INEC say the reform go help strengthen supervision of political parties using measurable standards and its Political Party Performance Index, with support from Westminster Foundation for Democracy and Nigerian electoral experts.
