Former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, don talk say all dis talk about GDP growth no make sense if ordinary people no dey feel am for their daily life.
Osinbajo yarn dis one for Abuja on Wednesday during the 65th anniversary event of the Ford Foundation, where he emphasize say true development no fit happen without social justice and better welfare for citizens.
He talk say even though Africa dey grow fast for GDP numbers, the continent still dey suffer from poor living standards, especially for area like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
“Africa na the fastest-growing continent for GDP, but still the one wey people life no too better. GDP growth no mean say everybody dey develop or get better job or good life,” Osinbajo talk.
The former VP remember say when he dey office, many Nigerians dey always question those reports wey claim say economy dey grow.
“When we dey talk GDP growth, people go ask, ‘These people dey live for another country? I never fit pay school fees or hospital bill — where the growth dey?’” he recall.
Osinbajo talk say true development suppose show for how many people fit get better access to work, school, hospital, and safe environment.
He advise African leaders make dem drop the trickle-down style of governance and focus on bottom-up plans wey go start from the grassroots to lift citizens from poverty.
“Make we build growth wey start from the people. When the poor begin see better life, the whole country go strong,” he add.
