    Di call come after National Assembly don finish amending NDLEA Act, 2004 for June 2025, but President Bola Tinubu no sign am because e clash with Section 58(4) of 1999 Constitution.

    Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), talk this one for workshop wey NHRC organize with civil society groups and human rights defenders. Di workshop, “Towards a Comprehensive Drug Harm Reduction Strategy in Nigeria”, dey aim to reduce drug harm while protecting human rights.

    Represented by him Chief of Staff, Charles Luri-Bala, Bamidele hail NHRC and partners, talk say good drug policy suppose mix enforcement with treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration.

    “National Assembly believe say effective drug strategy no suppose punish people wahala, we need approach wey focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” Bamidele talk.

    Di Senate leader explain say President Tinubu reject di amendment bill because e get constitutional wahala, but e fit still dey reconsider if di conflicting sections dem change.

    Bamidele add say di disputed bill dey propose make NDLEA fit keep small portion of proceeds from drug crimes, instead of all confiscated assets dey go Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account.

    He assure stakeholders say lawmakers dey ready to review and support amendments wey go give legal and institutional framework for better, balanced anti-drug strategy wey e talk say critical for national development.
