Universities shutdown as talks shift to Tuesday amid salary dispute

SSANU NASU strike Nigeria universities, FG meeting deadlock, public universities shutdown don worsen as meeting between Federal Government and Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions end without any agreement.

According to reports, the strike start on April 30 after government fail to conclude renegotiation of the 2009 agreement within the one-month ultimatum wey unions give.

Furthermore, disagreement still dey over salary increase, as government initially offer 30 percent raise but later withdraw am, while unions insist on minimum 40 percent, citing fairness and proper negotiation process.

At Monday meeting, government explain reason behind withdrawal of the offer and beg unions to suspend the strike. However, union leaders say dem no get authority to call off strike without consulting their full structure, leading to adjournment.

Speaking earlier, SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, describe the strike as total success, adding say compliance reach 100 percent across affected institutions.

He stress say union no go back down, insisting say their demand na fairness and equity for members. According to am, all university services including clinics and admin offices don shut down completely.

In addition, students across the country now face uncertainty as exams, registration and other academic activities don suffer delay, exposing weakness in Nigeria higher education system.

However, stakeholders still dey hope say the rescheduled meeting fit bring solution, although unions warn say if government no act fast, the shutdown fit become worse.
