President Bola Tinubu don give green light make dem begin collect 15% import duty for petrol and diesel wey dem dey bring enter Nigeria.
The new policy, wey go start sharp-sharp, na part of government plan to protect local refinery business and balance the downstream oil market wey don dey shake.
Inside one letter wey carry date October 21, 2025, and wey him private secretary Damilotun Aderemi sign, Tinubu tell FIRS and NMDPRA make dem start the new duty policy immediately.
The idea na from FIRS chairman, Zacch Adedeji, wey talk say the 15% duty go help balance market, encourage local refining, and stop people wey dey use importation spoil local business.
Adedeji yarn say: “Government wan protect both consumers and producers, make refinery fit recover cost, and make investment sweet again for Nigeria oil sector.”
Dem calculate say the new duty fit make landing cost for petrol rise by about ₦99.72 per litre, wey mean Lagos pump price go fit reach around ₦964.72 per litre. Still, e cheap pass many African countries like Senegal ($1.76/litre) and Ghana ($1.37/litre).
Right now, Dangote Refinery for Lagos don start to produce diesel and jet fuel, and small-small modular refinery for Edo, Rivers, and Imo don dey do their own too.
But petrol wey dem still dey import na about 67% of wetin Nigeria dey use every day. Government say this new policy go help reduce that wahala and make Nigeria refinery stand well again.
