
AHF Nigeria don call on European Union (EU) to support fairness and equality for the ongoing global pandemic agreement discussions.
Dem make the call during press briefing for Abuja, as negotiations continue for World Health Organization (WHO) Pandemic Agreement and the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) Annex.
Country Programme Director of AHF Nigeria, Echey Ijezie, urge EU leaders make dem stop blocking provisions wey go ensure equal access to vaccines and health resources across countries.
According to am, if the agreement no strong well, e fit lead to another situation like the “vaccine apartheid” wey happen during COVID-19 pandemic, where some countries suffer lack of access.
He say, “EU must allow fairness so that all countries fit benefit. Weak agreement go put everybody for risk.”
Call for Strong Global Health System
Ijezie also stress say EU suppose support benefit-sharing, accountability and transparency to make sure say all nations get equal opportunity to protect their people during health emergencies.
He warn say without fairness, efforts to build local vaccine production and health independence for regions like Africa go suffer.
Nigeria, Africa Urged to Build Capacity
National Secretary of Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Martin Egbanubi, also call on Nigerian government to invest more in local vaccine production and research.
He say African countries need to depend less on foreign nations and build their own systems to handle future pandemics.
CSOs Show Strong Support
Other groups, including Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), NEPHWAN and ASHWAN, also show support for fairness, inclusiveness and justice in global health policies.
