Federal Government don scrap di policy wey been make schools use local languages teach students for primary and early education levels. From now, English go be di official language for teaching across all levels for Nigeria schools.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announce di change on Wednesday for Abuja during di 2025 Language in Education International Conference wey British Council organize.

Di decision follow wetin dem agree for di 69th National Council on Education meeting wey happen for Akure, Ondo State, from November 3 to 7.

Before now, di 2022 National Language Policy talk say from nursery to Primary Six, children suppose learn with their mother tongue or language of their community. Di aim na to promote culture and make children sabi book better from small.

But Alausa talk say government don see evidence say di policy no dey work well. “We don notice say areas wey dey use mother tongue too much dey record plenty failure for WAEC, NECO and JAMB,” he talk.

“Na evidence-based governance we dey do now. English go be di language for teaching from nursery reach university,” di minister add.

He talk say di use of local languages as main teaching method for the past 15 years don cause wahala for some regions, make students no dey understand English well and dey fail national exams.

Alausa come challenge people wey no agree with di new policy make dem bring data wey go show better result from di old system.

Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed, talk say government don start new plan to train teachers for literacy and numeracy, especially those wey dey teach from nursery to Primary Three.

British Council Country Director, Donna McGowan, promise say dem go continue to support Nigeria education reforms through teacher training, language development, and leadership programmes.
