Federal Government don give all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education 30 days to explain how dem take use TETFund money wey still dey their hand.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, give the order for Abuja on Thursday when he meet with heads of tertiary institutions. He warn say any school wey no fit account for the unspent money go face sanction and the funds go move to other schools wey dey do their project well.
Alausa talk say the ministry don tire for situation where schools dey keep money wey suppose build classroom, lab and hostel without using am. He talk say government no go allow carry-over of unspent money again unless the school get better reason.
He say: “All institutions must submit report of all the money wey dem never use within 30 days. We go verify am together. Any unspent fund go move to priority projects.”
The minister also talk say government go train bursars, procurement officers and project managers to manage money well and make report transparent. He add say a public dashboard go soon dey where Nigerians fit see how TETFund money dey shared and used for each school.
TETFund don raise alarm before say many schools never touch the money wey government give dem. For July, dem even threaten say dem go delist schools wey no dey use their allocation and give am to others wey dey perform.
House of Representatives Committee on TETFund talk for August 2024 say about ₦500 billion still dey idle for Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), while ASUU say the real figure fit reach ₦600 billion.
Alausa talk say time don reach for accountability. “TETFund must lead with professionalism and transparency. School heads must act fast and auditors must check everything,” he yarn.
Former ASUU President, Prof. Victor Osodeke, still blast some university heads wey dey keep TETFund money for years without using am.
He talk say, “This money na public money. Some schools don hold am for 10 to 15 years without action. Government must punish anybody wey no fit use am well.”
He add say the funds suppose help build better lecture halls, research labs and hostels across universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for the country.
